"...And he was never heard from again." Masaomi made a face as he shone the flashlight under his chin, wiggling his fingers ominously as his grin turned garish with the light.

"..."

Mikado and Anri watched him silently for a moment, and then Mikado turned back to Anri, pointing at a section of the homework they were working on. "I think this is going to be on the test, so we should review it."

"Ah... I thought so too." Anri agreed quietly, making a note in her book and looking slightly unsure about ignoring Kida, but more unsure what to say in response to his outrageous horror story.

Kida stood up as the other two completely ignored him, posing dramatically and pointing the flashlight like a sword, the light shining directly in Mikado's eyes.

"H-hey!" Mikado lifted his hand to shield his face, frowning.

"Don't worry, Anri-chan, I'll be your knight and protect that erotic body of yours from any predators! Even the supernatural kind. I'll fight any hungry ghosts to protect you~"

"Masaomi!" Mikado continued to protest as Kida threw himself to his knees and grabbed Anri's hand. She blinked at him, keeping her general introverted composure as Mikado grabbed Kida's collar from behind and hauled him back over the table. "Stop harassing Sonohara-san!" Mikado was frowning and glaring and Kida rolled onto his back, scattering their homework.

"There's a ghost now! Look how pale and frightening he is!" Masaomi grabbed Mikado in a headlock.

Anri watched the two wrestle on the table, Masaomi laughing and Mikado protesting. They really did look like they were having a lot of fun. Right in front of her, and not... Across the picture frame. She still didn't know how to respond to that. As the boys tusseled and generally ruined all the homework they'd been working on, or any chance for her to continue, Anri bent down and picked up the fallen flashlight, holding it in her lap for a moment as she thought.

Very quietly she began to speak, but somehow Mikado and Masaomi heard her, and stopped rough-housing to look. Masaomi had Mikado in a headlock and they were both tangled in a sprawl across the table. The way both their faces turned towards Anri with identical expressions though... She wanted to laugh. But she kept her expression still and serious. The way the light from the flashlight reflected on her glasses made her seem extra eerie as she spoke.

"They say that this time of year is the most dangerous to invoke the spirits. Young people especially have a heightened reaction to the supernatural, and they're careless, telling ghost stories and doing tests of courage into forbidden places, disturbing the angry spirits who only wish to be left alone. Foolish students bringing the attention of ghosts and demons as they tell each other scary stories, never knowing what truly listens." Her voice had just the right quality of soft intensity that Mikado and Kida were riveted. "Of course in this age of rationality people attribute things to accident or tragedy, but the truth is much more sinister. The ghosts of the dead are definitely tormenting the living, you only have to look closely to realize--if you don't rationalize it before you can see the truth. Such monsters are well known to exist, and their favorite prey are the naive and boastful..."

She lifted the flashlight to shine it in Kida and Mikado's face, causing them both to cry out and try to block the light.

"Yes. That's right, the disrespectful hooligans who defile the names of the dead and mock them." Her voice remained almost monotonous, no real drama in it except the undercurrent of tension, but that made it even more convincing. "I can see the mark of the curse on you both... Only a full ritual cleansing can save you from great misfortune... Truly... It might be too late already, the spirits have marked you, to eat your flesh and nourish themselves with your tragedies..."

"E-eh?!" Mikado pulled out of Kida's headlock, flailing.

"Hey! Anri-chan, don't curse us! I'm too pretty to be doomed!" Kida laughed, shoving Mikado casually in the face. "Man, you're really good at this. I felt chills--Mikado you look like you've seen a ghost!"

"I'm always this pale." Mikado shoved back. "Th-that was... You have a really good um, flair for story-telling Sonohara-san."

"Still a chicken, Mikado? Maybe Anri-chan will comfort you with her body--no that'd be wasted on a virgin like you. Instead she should comfort me with--ow!" Kida's words cut off as Mikado pulled on his ear hard.

Anri covered her mouth with her hand to muffle the soft laughter. Even the insistent whispers of love from the sword couldn't ruin the happiness of this moment as Mikado and Kida grinned back at her.
